Biography

Born legally blind, Robert Koval, as you may well imagine, has been no stranger to overcoming adversity.  Given this conditions, it is a little astonishing that he has chosen to be a visual artist, a painter of landscapes. But Roberts delight in the experience of seeing, and his love for creating objects that reflect the power and wonder of that experience, are testimony to no small vision indeed.
Robert grew up in rural mid-Michigan, and this is where he discovered the joy of being a part of the natural landscape. Wandering the fields and woods as a youth, he relished the patterns of light and color, shapes and texture that were constantly revealing themselves as the sunlight changed throughout the day and the season.
The wonder of being in an extraordinary world such as ours, has spurred a life long quest for knowledge and understanding.  He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kendall College of Art and Design; and he spent his twenties gaining experience from all different walks of life.  He traveled around the United States and even as far afield as India, to study, explore and grow.
Turning 30 Robert’s quest for experience changed into desire to give back in some way.  He decided to help young people who may be struggling with adversity themselves.  So he received a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Aquinas College, and spent several years teaching “at risk” teenagers in the city schools of Grand Rapids, MI.
After marrying his true love, Robert felt drawn to being an Artist once again.  To follow his innate talents and vision no matter what happens.  Because life is short and time is precious.  So, he took up painting in earnest, and he hasn’t looked back since.  Many people find themselves quite moved upon first seeing one of Robert’s vibrant paintings. After which they join the ever-growing list of private and corporate collectors of his work.  Robert continues to refine his vision and master his craft as he pursues the most elusive qualities of light, creating a vision that delights the eye, arrests the mind, and enchants the heart.
